The North Carolina Hispanic College Fund

2012-2013 Application Available Online

A charitable fund established by the North Carolina Society of Hispanic Professionals, NCSHP to benefit Hispanic students in North Carolina.

The North Carolina Hispanic College Fund awards annual scholarships worth between $500 and $2,500.  Scholarships recipients are recent graduates of North Carolina high schools who are of Hispanic/Latino background.  Recipients of a NC Hispanic College Fund scholarship must enroll in a degree program at a community college or a 2- or 4-year college/university and be committed to public service and community development.

Selection Criteria

  • Graduate of a NC high school within the past 2 years.
  • A four-year cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale (3.5 on a 5.0 scale).
  • 2 letters of recommendation from a high school teacher, principal, pastor, employer, or other community leader.
  • An official high school transcript.
  • Personal statement (500 words).

Additional Considerations

  • Preference will be given to students who enroll full-time.  However, part-time students are encouraged to apply.
  • Preference will be given to foreign-born applicants or the native born children of foreign-born parents.
  • Recipients will be chosen based on: family economic need, community involvement, academic achievement, volunteerism and leadership.

Important Dates

The North Carolina Hispanic College Fund committee must receive applications by January 15th of each year. Award announcements are mailed by April 1st of each year.

Scholarship Disbursement

Upon receipt of the recipient's official letter of acceptance and contact information for the school's financial aid office, all scholarship awards will be sent directly to the college or university where the they enroll.  For scholarships under $1,000, one payment will be made prior to the start of the fall semester.  For scholarships over $1,000, one half of the scholarship will be paid prior to the start of the fall semester and one half will be paid prior to the start of the spring semester. Scholarship funds will be designated for tuition, room, and board only.  If these expenses have already been met, the award will be placed into an account at the educational institution for use by the student as needed.

Renewable

All applicants and scholarship recipients may re-apply for up to 4 years. To obtain a renewal, the recipient must provide the NC Hispanic College Fund Committee with an official transcript and proof of enrollment for the following academic year prior to the start of the new school year.

Progress Energy Hispanic Scholarship

The “Progress Energy Scholarship” established by Progress Energy Foundation will benefit Hispanic students that plan to enroll at a North Carolina community college or a university and to pursue the fields of electrical, mechanical, nuclear, chemical or civil engineering.
Applications are available to all students at NC high schools who are of Hispanic/Latino background.
Students applying to a “Progress Energy Scholarship” should mark corresponding box in the NC Hispanic College Fund application. Deadline to apply is January 15, 2012.
Scholarships worth between $1,000 and $2,500 will be awarded for the 2012-2013 school year.

IME Becas

The Government of Mexico through the Consulate General of Mexico in Raleigh granted $15,000 to the North Carolina Society of Hispanic Professionals  for the establishment of the “Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior (IME) Becas” Fund to provide college scholarships to Mexican students.  The “IME Becas” scholarships will be established within the North Carolina Hispanic College Fund (NCHCF) for students of Mexican origin enrolled in public NC Universities or Community Colleges that do not have access to another type of scholarship or financial support.
Applications are available to all students at North Carolina high schools who are of Mexican origin.  Scholarship recipients will be required to report their academic performance at the conclusion of the 2012-2013 academic year as well as perform a social service activity throughout the duration of the scholarship.The IME Becas scholarships will be awarded during the first quarter of 2012 for the 2012-2013 school year.  Applications are due by January 15th, 2012.

The Isabella Carvalho Health Scholarship (2007-2011)

The Isabella Carvalho Health Scholarship was established through the NC Hispanic College Fund at Triangle Community Foundation.  These scholarships will be given to Latino/a students who have expressed an interest in going into a field related to health care including but not limited to medicine, nursing, public health, pharmacy, dentistry, sports medicine or allied health.  The scholarship can be used to attend a community college, four year college or university.  The recipients of this scholarship can also be considered for a scholarship from the NC Hispanic College Fund.  Preference will be given to female applicants.  This scholarship is renewable for up to two years, but preference will be given to new applicants.  Recipients are required to keep in touch with the donor and must send an annual letter updating the donor on his/her progress. No Separate Application Required.
